Charlie Weirich

Coleman Funeral Home of Olive Branch Charles Michael “Charlie” Weirich passed away on March 31, 2026, after a lengthy illness. Charlie was born on July 2, 1941. He was the only child of Melvin Marie and Woodrow Wilson Weirich. As the only child of working parents, he learned at an early age how to take care of himself. He knew how to fix a meal and do his laundry by the time he was 6 years old. He was proud of his self-reliance. Thus, it was difficult for him as strokes ate away at his independence. Yet he suffered it all with dignity and steadfast faith. At an early age, Charlie demonstrated superior athletic ability. He played football and baseball, but he especially excelled at baseball. He dominated as a left-handed pitcher from grade school through high school graduation. He was a state champion in 1959 as part of a Christian Brothers College High School team that included two future major leaguers. For years, his family has proudly listened to his peers say things like: “I couldn’t hit him” or “He was a great pitcher”. Friends from that era almost always referred to him as Lefty or Left-Hander. In high school, Charlie met the love of his life, Catherine Theresa “Cathy” Alfonso. They married on April 15, 1963, just before Charlie graduated from Christian Brothers College. Cathy has six siblings. Being an only child, Charlie loved his in-laws and their spouses like brothers and sisters. Cathy and Charlie have four children: Chuck (Amy), Tim (Kathryn), Ted (Jennifer), and Amy (Corey). Charlie was an outstanding father and husband. He always made time to play sports with the boys, often coaching their teams. He also made time for his daughter and took her almost everywhere. He was Cathy’s helper in the kitchen, landscaper, repair man, and world-class painter. He also sang in several of the choirs she directed. Charlie also leaves 13 grandchildren who called him Papa: John (Sara), Wesley, Steven, Lillie, Wilson, Justin, Mary Helen, Lucy, Kaitlyn, Lainey, Peter, Anthony, and Sidney. He also leaves a great-granddaughter, Louisa, with whom he was proud to share a birthday. Charlie, a CPA, retired at age 66. Ater retirement, he donated countless hours to his parish, the Knights of Columbus, and his family. For several years after retirement, Charlie also worked as a part-time driver for an auto wholesaler, where he made a new group of friends in his 70s. Charlie was generous with his time and money. He and Cathy enjoyed making someone’s day. That might include buying Christmas gifts for a family down on their luck or leaving a $100 dollar tip for a server who was obviously working hard. The family wants to thank Baptist Hospital-Desoto, Desoto Healthcare, and Shepherd Hospice for the excellent care provided to Charlie. Additionally, the family thanks his caregivers: Tiawana Lang and her son, Tomario; Tommie Golden; and Brandon Bradley. Charlie’s family will sorely miss his love, guidance, and unfailing support. Many happy memories survive and will forever. Friends are invited to a visitation with the family on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Guy Blair will officiate.
