Coleman Funeral Home of Olive Branch Garry D. Alcorn, 70, passed away, leaving behind a legacy defined by his sharp intellect, unwavering reliability, and deep devotion to his family. Born on June 20, 1956, in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee, Garry’s roots in his hometown ran deep. As a young man, he developed a strong work ethic while working at the family business, the T.D. Alcorn Store. Garry pursued his education with distinction, graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he earned master’s degrees in both Psychology and Finance. These fields served as the foundation for a successful and dedicated 38-year career in banking. His professional journey began in 1988 in Cookeville, Tennessee, with Citizens Bank and Union Planters. In 1990, he relocated to Memphis, where he spent the remainder of his life, continuing his career as a Vice President and Credit Officer with BancorpSouth, Landmark Bank, and Paragon Bank. In 1988, Garry met his life partner, Martha Hughes, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring bond. Those who knew Garry will remember him as a man of great character—gentle, honest, and profoundly generous. He possessed a quick-witted, dry sense of humor that could brighten any room. A man of diverse interests, he was a passionate sports fan who delighted in the nuances of statistics. Beyond his professional and personal pursuits, he was a dedicated advocate for the preservation of history and antiques, always seeking to honor the stories of the past. Above all else, Garry’s life was anchored by his deep love and dedication to his family. He will be remembered as a steady, intelligent, and kind presence whose influence will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Garry was preceded in death by his parents, Katie Hall Alcorn and Neil Denton Alcorn, Sr. He is survived by his life partner, Martha Hughes; daughter, Malina Fuller (Chuck) and Kristina Hughes; grandchildren, Fiona Charnow, Evan Charnow, Lilly Charnow, Gracie Fuller, Aidan Armstrong, and Abigail Fuller; brother, Neil Alcorn, Jr. (Peggy); nephews, Michael Alcorn (Geri Anna), Phillip Alcorn (Rachel) and great-nephews, Will Alcorn and Luke Alcorn. Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at Coleman Funeral Home of Olive Branch on Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A celebration of life service will follow at 12 p.m. In lieu of traditional flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
